DA4TI’s Executive Director Peter Mmbando at the Summit of the Future: Advancing Global Cooperation and Peacebuilding

Our Executive Director, Peter Mmbando, participated in the Summit of the Future, held in September 2024 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This high-level event brought together world leaders to build a new international consensus aimed at improving the present and safeguarding the future. The Summit highlighted growing concerns over the “increasing atmosphere of distrust” fueled by ongoing global crises and conflicts, which are exacerbated by “outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities.” In response to these challenges, the Summit emphasized that more “effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival.”

A key outcome of the Summit was the adoption of the Pact for the Future, an internationally-negotiated, action-oriented agreement designed to forge consensus on global commitments and ensure concrete actions to address current challenges and future opportunities. This once-in-a-generation moment aims to rebuild trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively achieve shared goals and tackle emerging threats.

The Pact for the Future focuses on several critical themes, offering solutions and responses to global challenges:

  • Sustainable development and financing for development
  • International peace and security
  • Science, technology, innovation, and digital cooperation
  • Youth and future generations
  • Transforming global governance

DA4TI, which has long been committed to advancing multilateral solutions and promoting international peace and security, has closely followed the developments leading to the Summit and the adoption of the Pact for the Future. DA4TI continues to collaborate with UN member states and other stakeholders to advance the sustaining peace and peacebuilding agenda. Among the Pact’s five thematic chapters, the DA4TI Initiative is particularly focused on the section on International Peace and Security, while also addressing issues related to sustainable development and financing for development.
